You might know Western Digital as a Fortune 150 company, or as the world’s largest maker of hard drives and memory products (which we are!). What you may not know is that Western Digital designs, builds and ships software that reaches over 300 million people every year.

We strive to deliver an amazing hardware and software experience to millions of consumers every year. This is a massive opportunity to help connect people with their data, their devices and most importantly each other.

We are about creating a personal cloud experience that seamlessly pulls all of your content together (pictures, music, video, documents) into your personal device and making it available on any screen, anyplace and any time. A key part of the platform is our REST API which powers all of our mobile, web and desktop experiences.

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer that will work on our Platform team developing our client SDK and APIs. This position reports to a Senior Manager of Software Development in the Client Solution business unit. The position is based in Milpitas, CA or Redwood City, CA, whichever is more convenient to you.

From the hiring manager, Gabriel:

People joining this team will have the opportunity to work with very experienced people. They will work in a challenging technical environment and have the chance to work on a broad set of complex problems, from embedded systems to cloud computing. There are no simple problems here. We are trying to solve complex problems.

I've been with the company for 5 years. I joined the company through the acquisition of my startup in France. The work is very interesting. We had the opportunity to build something from scratch. This involved everything from the Cloud to the clients. It's rare that you get to build something from the ground up so this is exciting.

I believe that at the end of the day it's the engineer's job to make technical decision--solutions come from the engineers, not from managers. As a manager my job is to remove obstacles in the way of engineers and to make sure we're working on the right set of things.

Example profiles that will be successful in this role:

  • Experience in web development frameworks like Angular and React, HTML5 and CSS3.
  • Experience in using C and C++ system libraries in Android with NDK.
  • Experience with profiling Android apps.
  • 3rd party libraries like Dagger2 and Retrofit2.
  • You’ve worked (well) with external partners.
  • You can think on your feet and reason about complex topics.
  • You enjoy helping other people.

We understand that there is a broad spectrum of technical experiences people have, and not everyone has everything. We’re not looking for unicorns. We’re looking for technically adept people with the capacity to learn and a willingness to put in the effort needed to continually get better. If this is you, we’d love to talk.
